Note-Taking Strategies



What is note taking ?
Ø  Writing down ideas from lectures and readings in our own words.

Why should we take notes?
Helps us to pay attention in class.
Helps us study for Final exam.
Help us improve our memory.
Help us take ownership of ideas.
Help us engage our senses.
Help us organize and process data and information.
Help the lectures test student on how well they captures given information.


How we should take notes?
ü Seating near the front or center for better vision and hearing.
ü Avoid distraction
ü Complete inventory
ü Write Date and label notes
ü Give space to write
ü Use your own language
ü Use Abbreviations
ü Use cornell Note taking

While taking Notes
² We should be an aggressive(don’t being Rude)
² Don’t be a passive listener
² Ask question if it permitted
² Observe the Lecturer Mood

How do we Prepare for class?
Ø Do pre-reading and homework
Ø Review syllabus
Ø Preview previous notes
Ø Look up key words prior to class
Ø Plan on listening 80% of the time and 20% of the time
Ø Write the date at the top of your paper for notes.
Ø Leave spaces between the lines so that you can add information later.

What Should we do if The Lecturer is not too interesting?
ü Pay attention to the ACT of writing
ü Ask Question
ü Sit in front of the room(harder to fall asleep)


How do we review after a class?
² Review notes along with the book
² Create our own examples
² Discuss and compare notes with others
² Re-write notes
² Practice those skills you wish to develop
² Ask professor for clarification
